KX500 EXHAUST PORT LOCATION

Trying to figure out a good way to locate where the exhaust ports are located on the piston.

Motorrads idea is to accurately mark the piston on the top (I just did a quick mark up so you can see what I'm talking about).
Then center the piston in a lathe.
Putting a pencil in the tool fixture so that the tip touches the piston and then simply run the pencil down the length of the piston.
Since I don't have a lathe I'll have to improvise...
I tried spraying some lay out fluid up the exhaust ports but just made a big mess
