Other projects....

Post by Sandblaster »

Here is a pic of my old ride.
84 Toyota 4x4 with a 85 Chevy 4.3 V6 built by RHS.
Trans was by TCI.
Santini paint.
Auburn in the front diff and a detroit locker in the rear.
All custom VDO gauges and dash.
It was in over 10 issues of 4 wheeler magazine.
I had to rebuild that engine 4 times in the 8 years I had it.
I guess i was a bit abusive.

I use to run Search and Rescue down in Baja for Baja Promotions.
Lots of fun..

Nice!
I had that engine in a 4X Blazer, didn't get great mpg but I guess that wasn't the point. That RHS built engine must'a motorvated that Yota right on down the line!
My Dad wanted to trade it in on something when the Cash for Clunkers
was going on...arghh... probably would have still been driving that thing....:x .

anyway, Nice Truck!

Back then Toyota didn't even have a V6 in these trucks so it was a big deal at the time.
RHS built a very respectable engine but they were still experimenting with the 4.3.
The heads were nicely built but they were not the vortec heads which I later installed after some porting and matching ect.
Besides the intake ramps, the vortec heads had much better flow characteristics due to greatly enlarged ports.
They used a comp cam 260 degree which was fine for the heads they used but I had comp cam grind me a 280.
Also at that rebuild I took out the GM HEI and installed the full MSD set up.
All of that combined would light up those 12.50 rear tires :D
Before that rebuild I could barely get them to bark.
I sure surprised a lot of Camaro's and Mustangs in that truck
Couldn't take them on the top end but 0-100 was a riot!

Yeah it was.
Of course mileage was bad.... about 12 on the freeway....
Off road? about 3 gallons per mile :D
It came with a TCI built turbo 350 and a 1800 rpm stall speed torque converter.
1st gear use a case hardened interplanetary and was 11 percent lower then stock and 2nd gear was 7 percent lower then stock.
3rd was one to one.
I always wanted the 700R4 transmission with a locking torque converter but I never seemed to have enough dough.
I'm sure it would have improved the mileage a little.
