Jeff Grawbarger NOS powered KX500

Post by Sandblaster »

Jeff noticed a few of our builds and asked me to build him a balanced crank and a new top end for his NOS powered KX500.
My first thought was COOL!!!!
Then it's like.... wait, NOS? KX500??? :?
So we set out to build him a crankshaft that was as tough as you can get for a KX500.
STOCK crank halves with a Wossner rod.
We split the crank halves, polished it up as well as the rod and sent it out for balance to Alward25 (Alex)
He balanced it to a 59% balance factor.
Then off to Millennium for assembly, true and weld.
The results?
You won't see very many KX500 cranks that look as good as these.

Jeff is breaking in the bike but says that it revs smoother and faster then ever before.... SO that's a good thing

The top end....
Well now.... you want me to give you all the gory details don't you :D
First off we had a cylinder that had been ported already that Jeff used for several years.
It's been on the dyno many times so Jeff knows what it put out before.
The question is, can we make it do better :ugeek:

So, there were a few things I did.
Mainly clean up what was there. and add a few touches that weren't.
Adam Millar from MIllar Racing engines (Current land speed record holder for the streamer class running a CR500 engine) came up with a very good idea for the KIPS valves.
Valves? You are running valves?
Well, yes and no.
Most drag guys remove the valves completely or make custom ones.
I was going to take stock valves and stick them wide open as well as give them a few mods.
Adam's idea was to make custom aluminum ones.
Easy to install and remove...

Here is stock valves wide open while looking through the main exhaust port on the left and ours on the right
