Will a KLR650 engine fit in a KL600

Post by Sandblaster »

Question:
Are the motor mounts the same for all kawasaki kl and klr motorcycles.
I have an 85 kl 600 but want to install a newer 650 engine.
I just need to know if it will bolt up the same.

Answer
Hi Scott.
I have never tried it.
However, my gut feeling is probably not.
At least not a direct bolt in.
Here is the interchange info on the brackets:
FITS 84-86 KL600 - RH 32029-1309, LH 32029-1334
FITS 87-91 KLR650 - 32029-1516
FITS 92-07 KLR650 - 32029-1805

The engine mounts from 87-07 look the same so I'm sure you could swap those years of engines with little problem.
If you go to an online parts diagram you will see major differences in the frame designs;

With enough time, money, and skills I'm sure you could make it fit.
I'm dropping a KX500 engine into a kx250f chassis.
It's a tight squeeze but it does fit:

The KL600 engine looks similar to the KLR650 so I think it would be worth it to pursue it further.
Since I have no direct experience with your project you might want to check with some of these forums:

There are a lot of KL and KLR Guru's out there that can give you a definite answer.
Thanks!
