From Steve Paxton:
Mike here are my 1993 KX 500 settings.
My home altitude is 3500ft to 5000ft around Vegas, riding Desert washes and mountain single line.
I also race/ride upwards of 6500ft to 9000ft
In mid state locations.
I get excellent performance and mocha brown plug readings when up that high.
I have no problems at home with the same settings.
I installed a new 38mm air striker and had Sudco do initial jetting. At the same time I refreshed my top end with new NOS "A" piston, and sent that to Mellinium Technologies to match my "A" cylinder bore with new plating. Along with my knife / Grinding honing of all lead edges of intake locations at Reed cage and bottom of my cylinder. (My only mods to the engine) also replaced the Reeds.
I ultimately ended up going leaner one pilot size. After many settings trials.
The bike runs pump gas 97 octane,
Amsoil Interceptor oil at 50:1
I run a #9 plug
38mm Keihin Quad Vent Air Striker settings
for higher altitudes in Desert...
Here is where it runs, and performs at it's best, out pulling many 450f bikes.

Main jet 160
Pilot jet. 55
Needle # 48-DGH (clip 2 from top)
Air Screw 2.25 turns
