I have a 98 rm250.
The Swing Arm Pivot Pin is stuck and I can't get it out.
I have beat on it with a 5 lb hammer and now I have mushroomed the end.
Am I missing some special trick?
Answer:
This is a common problem that I have had to deal with many times.
Nothing special to it, it just takes Kroil (Penetrating oil) brute force, heat or all three
If you don't want to use heat then try a bigger hammer.
If a bigger hammer does not budge it, you can use a press.
If you use a press be careful what you rest the frame on as you can bend your frame.
If that fails you can drill it out.
Drilling is a pain to do and takes a lot of patience.
On some bikes you can use a Sawsall with a metal blade and cut in between the frame and the swing arm and cut through the pin.
The big problem is the swing arm pivot bushings are hardened steel and you won't cut through them with a Sawsall unless you use one of their reciprocating grinding blades as they are usually too fat to use unless you don't care about your frame or the swing arm.
The trick is to be able to get the blade in between the bushing and the swing arm.
If you can spread your frame slightly and open up the distance between the bushing and the swing arm you will have the best chance with this method.
Once you cut through the pivot pin on either side of the swing arm you should be able to pull the swing arm out.
Last choice is a hand grinder or larger style Dremel tool with a grinder bit.
This can get real ugly
