here are my "POOFERS"

both were VERY ROUGH when I got them... I brought them back from "death".

the Rogers spencer had a busted front sight, had to re-machine it all, and set it. timing was off, reset the timing and lockup., had to make my own timing intexing lever for it to do so.. etc etc.

the Remington, well, the brass was GREEN when i got it, due to previous owner not cleanign after shooting, and the CYL was stuck to the shaft it spins on from fouling and not lube properly. (guy used petrolium based lube...not good with BP)... about 9hours in my ultra sonic. finaly broke it all free... then Worked on it, and polished it from there...

Very nice.
About 25 years ago I was cleaning out my step fathers truck and found a .357 mag that he had forgot about.
It was green, even the ammo and holster was green.
All it took was hours of clean up and it worked great.

And NO, he is not pointing it at the dog.
I know how it looks but he would NEVER point a loaded or unloaded gun at anybody or anything unless he intended to shoot it.
He is actually pointing it at his 50" plasma TV

What powder do you like to burn in your poofers?

I use nothing but REAL Black powder. NO substitutes..

My brand of choice. Goex FFF (for the pistols), and NOTHING BUT #10 Remington caps. the remington caps fit the Nipples better (huhu I said nipples). the CCI caps, 10"s are too tight, and cause miss fires, and #11 is too loose, tempting a chain fire. (chain fires are NO FUN)


Reason.

The powder substitutes, are either overpowered and force you to run less powder, thus having to plump your charge with cornmeal etc to get no air gaps in the load (have to compress the load with BP) (air space = pipe bomb) yes, the CYL will go boom... same with Black powder but not a problem due to having more in there, you are going to compress it.. (777 and others are the ones you have to cut back on load (by volume))...

Pyrodex. the best known BP substitute. is CORROSIVE AS HELL. more so than real BP. I shot some, just recently, as I had no choice, I have been cleaning the gun EVERY OTHER DAY for 2 months. and Im losing the battle.... and is at the other end of the PH scale, BP is a acid when done, Pyrodex is a BASE. so in order to neutrolize it (as most cleaners are ment to deal with acid) you have to use white vinigar to clean it. which, if your gun has brass, etc. guess what.. ...... and it cakes on harder than real BP. it is hard to get off, where real BP just whipes off.


I get all my caps from Cabellas.

and get all my powder from PowderInc.com as being in california.. its the only way. (well. from powder inc 1lb is $22 shipped. if I get it local, its $36 plus tax. and I have to drive to get it....

Thanks for the explanation and the video.
Both were informative and educational.
I always used BP.
Then again, I didn't know any better, it's just what I was told to use
