I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome here, but I said I'd have a thousand and one questions... I have finally got busy on my K5 in earnest and keep finding stuff that should be replaced. :o Anyway, on close inspection, I found the water pump spur gear on the crankshaft has some damage. The dufus that welded the clutch cover had too much buildup, and that weld buildup rubbed the clutch and apparently all those pieces running through the gears had a snowball effect, as there were some chunks out of gear teeth, which got into other gears, etc etc. Problem is, I already sent my crank out to be rebuilt and now I'm leary about getting that pressed in gear out without damaging anything on the crank. I found some posts on (I think) KX Rider about removing the gear and just wanted to get it from the Guru. Is it relatively easy to remove by heating the crank end and cooling the gear? The damage to the gear is minor, but I think I'd rather be done with it and replace it and the mating gear.

I have removed them and some are a lot easier then others to remove.
Once you get it out it's a cinch to press in the new gear.
I have never broke one or messed one up...
I believe I may have made some posts on that thread :shock:

The easiest way I found is to order a new one.
When it comes in, measure the shaft OD.
Order the correct size drill bit and drill it out.
When you put the new one in a light press fit is all you need as long as you use some retaining compound 8-)

I have an extra crank for my KX500 laying around that the guy who sold me one of my bikes threw in with the deal, and I was going to take some time and get it ready for my next tear down on one of my two bikes to save down time. First thing it needs is the water pump spur. It’s really chewed. How do you recommend getting the old one out? Heat up the snout and work it out with vise grips? I really don’t want to drill it if I can avoid that.

Wossner rods and pistons are the best quality available on the market for the KX500 hands down...
