I stumbled upon this by accident.
I had a 1986 kx125 head that I wanted to clean up.
So I vapor blasted it, dried it and painted it with some High head black that I had sitting on the shelf, and baked it at 200 degrees F for 1 hour.
Looked great, but I didn't have a clue about the color until I set the head on the cylinder..
Yeah yeah it's a bad pic..
It says DE 1634 LOW GLOSS BLACK
And the results..
It's not a perfect match but if you painted the entire engine you would have a hard time ever knowing that it wasn't factory

Re: 1986 KX125 ENGINE COLOR MATCHING
So, I'm thinking the 85-87 KX250's and KX500's may be the same..
I'll have to do some research on that...

So... Digging around in my junk piles..... I find a 1986 KX500 engine case
I cleaned one section really good...
Taped it off...
Nice and clean....

Painted and baked.
Removed the tape and?????
Not exactly what I had hoped for.
All things being equal... the case paint is in really bad shape so it really isn't a definitive test...
If I was going to build a earlier KX I'd consider using it.
Unless of course some of you Guru's out there have a better alternative that you would like to share
