I see what you mean with the extra bolt, my case and cover do not match. From what you stated the lower end is 97 up and the cover is 96 down? Is that correct or do I have it backward? Finally got the lower half after all that the engine is on it. For some reason I had it stuck in my head engine number was on the side cover not the case.

It's just a lower end ,no cylinder , head or side cover! That's why i was wondering if there was a way to determine what year it was from actually.

I am looking at used bottom end for my 97 kx 250 , its on eBay is there any way to tell what year without the side cover with vin?

I had some time in am to look at it. Found the washer on the shaft was dislodged from the proper position.

I tried spinning the shaft, you can feel the water pump and the exhaust advancer gears mess. You can see in with a flashlight that the notch on the backside is contacting the top of shift shaft, I did not have time to further investigate yet. I took it into work because we are slow of course, now I ...

Could shift shaft hold up right side cover?
Is it possible for the shift shaft to hold up the right side cover? The notch in the cover is hitting the top of the shift shaft no allowing cover to seat flush? I can see the half-moon on the backside of the cover contacting shaft.
