KX500 real dyno numbers pipes, reeds, carbs ect

Post by Sandblaster » Tue Jul 28, 2020 3:28 am

I'm going to post a updated pic at the top of this page after each dyno night.
This is a quick reference chart as it does not show the power curves which are extremely important to deciding which mods to do to your bike.
Again, this is for reference only.
Scroll down in this thread to see actual charts.

KX500 real dyno numbers...
Many KX500 guys make all sorts of claims,
This thread is all about real dyno numbers.
So lets get started.
I am using a completely stock 2001 KX500 that has less than 2 hours run time on it since it was new..
Special Thanks goes to Chad Cadnum for allowing me to run his bike.

Of the 3 runs shown, the first is checking jetting on the main.
The 2nd is to see where the needle was so that is why the hp numbers are so low.
The 3rd was after we moved the needle 1 clip up and went down 3 sizes on the main.
Just goes to show you how much hp can be gained or lost through jetting.

53.11 RWHP.

Next up.
We added a FMF Desert Grarly pipe and a Boyesen Rad valve.
We kept the stock muffler.
Ignore the green run.
It's a configuration we will discuss later..

Wow..
That was a nice gain of 5.5 hp at the rear wheel.
Nice...

Friday night dyno runs at #motogearspeedshop - KX500 testing and tuning of Chad Cadnum's all stock KX500 running a VF2 reed with the petals on the low tension setting. FMF Desert Gnarly pipe and a stock muffler. 92 pump gas with Motul 800 at 50:1. 58.99 hp and 47.91 ft/lb of torque. Put some C12 in it and you'll easily hit 60 at the rear wheel 😎 Thank you Moto gear for helping out with this project. It is quickly showing what is real and what is myth. Thank you Chad Cadnum for allowing us to run your Beautiful KX500.
and thank you Jason Tanner for helping wrench and run the dyno.

Jonathon Bell sold me this beautiful pipe a while back and I finally got around to testing it.
So far it is making more HP and more torque than the stock pipe, Pro Circuit 2, and a FMF Gnarly Desert pipe. Here is the setup.
Chad Cadnum's beautiful all Stock 01 KX500, VF2 reed at the low tension setting, 92 pump gas.
That's it.
49.71 ft/lb or torque
59.18 hp.
Drop in some c12 and you'll be over 60 at the rear wheel.
While the HP is impressive considering the setup the Torque is amazing...
This series of tests would not be possible with out Jason Tanner, Chad Cadnum, Moto Gear Speed Shop, and of course Jonathon Bell.

All stock except we are using a RAD valve and a Pro Circuit Works pipe against a FMF Gold Gnarly
